Frequently Asked Questions

It is possible to install solar solutions on a leased or rented commercial building, but you will need permission from your landlord. Most landlords are happy for companies to embrace green energy by installing solar panels, but always check first and get permission in writing where possible.

Solar PV is permitted development as long as the solar installation meets the following prerequisites:

  • It is roof mounted
  • Not in a conservation area
  • Not a listed building
  • The panels are at least 1m from the external edge of the building.
  • Rooftop commercial solar panels should project no more than 200mm from the roof slope.
  • For flat rooftops, panels protrude less than 1m from the roof surface and cannot be the highest part of the roof.

Solar carports and ground mounted solar installations will require planning permission.

If your system is over 50kWp, we still need to make an application to the local authority for a ‘certificate of lawfulness’ which takes about 8 weeks to acquire.

If you are still unsure if you need planning permission for your commercial solar installation please get in touch and we will be more than happy to help you.

There are several ways to pay for your solar panels. Many businesses choose to invest their own capital (CapEx) in the system, as reductions in their energy bill will provide a strong return in the long run.

However, if your company does not have the funds available, you can spread the cost of the commercial solar PV system over a number of years with Asset Finance. Some customers find that the money they save on their monthly energy bills pays for the monthly finance repayments.

You can also have an investor pay for the panels under a Power Purchase Agreement and pay nothing upfront.

Installation time will depend on the size of the solar panel system required.

Once we have approval from the Distribution Network Operator for your proposed setup, it will take a few weeks to schedule and plan the work. After that, it can take between a week to a few months to complete the installation project, depending on its size.

Our projects team will confirm the timeline with you when we provide our initial plan and keep you informed throughout the process.

If your roof is not suitable to fit solar panels to, then we have several alternative options available.

We can explore fitting a ground-mounted solar PV system or a solar carport, depending on the space available on your property.

The size of your solar array will depend on how much electricity your business requires to operate. Companies with a higher energy consumption will need a larger commercial solar PV system, providing you have the grounds or roof space for one.

Companies with a low energy consumption may only need a small to medium sized system to offset energy consumption from the grid.

AR Power can take your current energy data and design a bespoke solar PV system for your company or organisation that will be cost effective, reduce your reliance on energy from the grid, and get you closer to achieving Net Zero.
