Riverdale Paper has operated in the environmental sector for over 30 years, recycling and recovering a wide range of waste resources, including paper, cardboard, plastics and wood. It operates sites in Gateshead and Durham, and its business is founded on the principle of returning waste materials to useful production, critical to the success of the transition to a Circular Economy.
The decision to invest in solar power was driven by both the company’s environmental ethos, and the need to mitigate the impact of increasing energy costs.
526 solar panels have been installed on Riverdale’s Team Valley head office and processing facility. The energy generated by the panels will make a significant contribution to the demand for power from shredding and baling equipment on site, and will also supply power to the offices and amenity facilities.
Based upon Government-approved conversion factors, the solar array is projected to avoid 36 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. It will also assist Riverdale’s customers with their Scope 3 emissions targets, by reducing carbon impact in their supply chains.
Riverdale has also invested in ARP’s Energy Management system which allows the company to monitor the generation of solar energy, and the direction of the energy once produced, whether this is utilised on site or directed back into the grid.
